If you and your gadgets live on the edge, you’ll appreciate the thinking behind G-Form’s protective sleeves. Relying on something called Reactive Protection Technology, the lightweight sleeves are soft and flexible until they hit the sidewalk.

Upon impact, they stiffen and absorb most of the energy that results from the drop. How tough are they? According to G-Form, the iPad Extreme Sleeve is tough enough to protect an iPad dropped 500 feet from an airplane, while its Extreme Sleeve for laptops can withstand a drop from a 20-foot balcony.

A case for either version of an iPad costs $59.95, a case for an 11-inch laptop is $69.95 and a case for a 13-inch or 15-inch laptop is $79.95.

MDL Technology, LLC Reviews ZDnet.com Article: Apple Making Headway With Music Publishers

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Posted By: T.J. Bloom, COO of MDL Technology, LLC

According to an article from ZDnet.com, “Hopes are high in the music sector that Apple will have all the licenses it needs to launch a cloud music service in time for the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts on June 6.”
Apple’s approach is far different from rivals who rely on users uploading their own music libraries, while Apple’s service is expected to stream files without the need to upload.

The article also states, “Negotiations between Apple and music publishers have begun in earnest only recently but the amount of money that separates the two sides from reaching a deal is relatively small, according to two sources with knowledge of the talks. That said, these are cloud-licensing contracts, which are new and complex and there are still several ways Apple’s service could be delayed, insiders say.”

Thank you to itinsideronline.com for Publishing T.J. Bloom’s Blog Post: New Gadgets for Your Employees?

Thank you to itinsideronline.com for publishing T.J. Bloom’s Blog Post: New Gadgets for Your Employees?

New Gadgets for Your Employees?

How should IT deal with employees’ requests for the newest tablets and other gadgets? We call it the consumerization of IT.

We tend to take our time with these things — especially if we will be rolling out a new gadget to several users — even though we love our gadgets as much as anyone else. We like to see whether the market will shake out some gadgets that don’t take off or hold up. In the tablet world right now, for example, do we go with the iPad, HP Slate or even the Xoom? They are all cool products. So how do you know what to get?

Do a Cost-benefit Analysis
Before making the purchase, the employee should justify it with a cost-benefit analysis. For instance, we’ve just started purchasing iPads for our employees who we believe can justify the expense with an increase in productivity. Using the iPad for sales-related activities makes a lot of sense to us. We feel a tablet is much less invasive to customers when giving demos at their desks. It’s easy and quick to get booted up, and the battery life is second to none. Compare this gadget to a laptop, which takes much more space and time to display. You have to have a place to set a laptop (and hope the customer has a large desk) and a bag to carry a laptop.

When considering whether or not to purchase a new gadget, the first thing you need to ask is, is it in the budget? If we didn’t budget for this item this year, I would not deviate from that. It’s hard to track back bottom-line results or income from something like this. But if you are going to be printing a $500 sales brag book or demo book with full color pictures and samples this year for each sales person, you might consider a tablet instead.

Get Familiar With the Technology
When it comes to support, with technology changing so quickly these days, it is very hard to keep up with the latest gadgets. If we see a trend or are purchasing a number of devices, such as cell phones for employees, then we will try to order one or two to let the tech team get familiar with them.

My advice is, try to standardize as much as possible. Everyone wants something newer, better or just different. But determine which roles, such as sales, should get a particular device and then put it in writing. And try to standardize on one thing for the group.

How Does Google’s Ultra High Speed Network in Kansas City, Kansas Effect Cloud Computing?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

By: T.J. Bloom, COO of MDL Technology, LLC

Google’s recent announcement to add an ultra-high speed network in Kansas City, Kan., last month has the tech community abuzz in Kansas City.  The impact that this network will have on technology and cloud computing in particular is tremendous.  Here is a tech assessment of the news as it relates to cloud computing (www.mdltechnology.com).

As cloud computing continues to be important to Kansas City businesses, Google’s announcement to bring an ultra high-speed network to KCK will have a significant impact on cloud computing in the area

One of the major hurdles with cloud computing has been that the broadband networks do not have the speed to make the technology run on all cylinders. However, Google’s new ultra high-speed fiber network in KCK will not only help eliminate this issue for businesses, but allow them to better utilize cloud technology.  This puts Kansas City metro companies on a national, if not global stage, for where the metro area will be heading with cloud technology.

In the near future, companies will be better equipped to attract talent to the metro area and recommend solutions that could not have been realized before.  However, Google’s new ultra high-speed fiber network in Kansas City, Kan., will not only help eliminate this issue for businesses, but allow them to better utilize cloud technology.  As technology is constantly evolving, now Kansas City will be at the forefront of this technology advancement along with the metro area of downtown Kansas City, Mo.

Broadband prices are going to get much more competitive.   Well think of your internet service now. Not bad if you don’t know anything different?  Well that is only using a few megabits maybe 3 to 10mb on average.  Then think about this. Google is bringing in a gigabit network gigabit is 1000 mb. This is like going from dial up to a broadband connection. This allows cloud computing to open an entirely new door to the applications, services, technology that we can use over the Web. These are speeds that you might see on your internal network at your office but not past that.

With Google’s network traveling at speeds just as fast as your internal network. Companies will be more likely to either outsource their IT or move to the cloud.  Look at the medical industry. If you have the ability to start sending HD videos to a specialist in another state or countries. Think of having a sonogram in Kansas City and streaming it real time to your parents in Texas or overseas.

MDL Technology, LLC Reviews PCWorld.com Article: The Cloud Requires Fresh IT Skills

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Posted by: T.J. Bloom, COO of MDL Technology, LLC

A recent article from pcworld.com, by Joab Jackson, reviews Wired magazine’s CIO Leadership Forum in New York. Some of the topics reviewed were what IT skills are needed for cloud as well as the changing role of an IT person.

This is important to consider because when implementing cloud, business owners must examine cloud integration and what options are available if he/she decides to integrate with another provider. A cloud provider must be flexible enough to allow integrations.

The Cloud Requires Fresh IT Skills

As organizations move more of their applications to the cloud, they might find themselves needing skills different from what their system administrators now possess, according to IT executive panel discussions on cloud computing on Wednesday.

“The role of the IT person is changing,” said Greg Bouncontri, chief information officer for Pitney Bowes, during one panel on cloud computing at Wired magazine’s CIO Leadership Forum in New York.

“There will be some skillset shifts within our organizations that will be needed,” said Angelo Valletta, CIO of Sun National Bank, during a second panel.

Because the cloud will standardize infrastructure, so the collective thinking went, IT shops will spend far less time managing the servers and instead will need to focus on understanding how the multiple cloud offerings could work together and how they could be used to benefit their organizations, the panelists said.

Bouncontri said that while Pitney Bowes’ IT personnel have traditionally concentrated on security and operational efficiency, now they also must find ways to use cloud IT services as a “catalyst for growth” for the company.

In other words, cloud services are creating a more competitive environment for the bank. Bouncontri described an unnamed new financial services company that used cloud service providers for most all of its IT services, including core banking, CRM (customer relationship management), Internet banking and mobile banking. Existing businesses will feel the pressure of startups rapidly lashing together existing cloud services to create new offerings, he noted.

“The role of IT will be much more about innovation,” agreed Saad Ayub, CIO for the media company Scholastic. Today, CIO duties are largely centered around the management of information using industry processes such as the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and the IT Information Library (ITIL). In the future, CIOs will have to think more about innovation as well, he said.

Cloud computing will also require more IT architecture skills than are commonly found in-house, the speakers also noted.

Fewer people will be needed to carry out the work of implementing programs, while more people would do the architecture work needed to tie together different cloud services, and to hook these services back to in-house systems, said Bob Kelly, a Microsoft vice president for server and cloud platform marketing, during his presentation at the conference.

Kelly heralded cloud computing as the next major shift in computing for the industry. Just as mainframes gave way to client-server computing in the 1990s, so too will most organizations move to cloud computing, at least for many of their applications. Such a dramatic change in styles of computing calls for changes in skillsets, he argued.

“Most of the work going forward will be integration, and architectural in nature. There will be a need for people in all levels who are thinking about a composite world. You have to think about how parts fit, which is an architectural mindset. It’s not implementation of a feature, it’s architectural in nature,” Kelly said in a follow-up interview.

“The maturation of these technologies might lead us to a place where we [will] have less technical people in-house than we currently have,” Bouncontri said. “Increasingly, our role will be on solution design. It’s a different kind of skillset.”
