Cybersecurity is a nationwide issue we all have to consider. Every time we log on, sign in, search or do anything online, our online security could be at risk of a cyberattack. Recently, the Senate took a step in the right direction to protect our nation from ongoing cyber attacks.
Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Corey Gardner (R-Colo.) reintroduced a bill this month that could mean important forward movement for cybersecurity in our government and our nation as a whole. Under the proposed State Cyber Resiliency Act, state and local governments would be able to work together to create plans to improve their cybersecurity defenses, as StateScoop reports. This would include their overall defenses for computer networks, communications systems and industrial control systems. The bill also aims to recruit and retain workers in the cybersecurity work field. The Senators identified that there are currently over 300,000 cybersecurity job openings in the nation.
According to Broadcasting and Cable, the State Cyber Resiliency Act would let the Department of Homeland Security propose and run a grant program for states looking for adjustments in their cyber resiliency measures. These proposals would then be reviewed by a 15-member board chaired by the secretary of homeland security.
Rep. Michael McFaul (R-Texas), who is introducing the bill in the U.S. House with Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) explains the reasoning for this bill: “Despite playing a vital role in protecting our nation against cyberattacks, state governments often do not have the vital resources they need to strengthen their cybersecurity capabilities or retain or recruit seasoned cybersecurity professionals.”
Cyberattacks have only been increasing, which means it’s time for the government to take action. This bill could be such a step forward to a more secure online world. 🔒🔑 In the meantime, make sure you’re doing your part to protect your company’s data.
