Mother’s Refuge in Kansas City gives young pregnant women a safe place to live. But it’s more than just a shelter. It’s a place to learn, heal, and grow. Moms get help with parenting, school, and building a better future for their families.

Three Levels of Support, One Mission
Mother’s Refuge gives young moms the help they need to grow and feel safe. Their program has three parts and can last up to five years.
1. Maternity Home
Young pregnant women can live at Mother’s Refuge for up to two years. While they’re there, staff help them care for their babies and learn life skills.
“We teach them how to love on baby, how to bond with baby, how to take care of baby, and themselves.”
2. Transitional Living Program
After the first program, moms can stay for up to three more years. They pay a small part of their income as rent. That money is saved and given back when they leave.
“Not only does that give them kind of a safety net, but they also have renters’ history here with us.”
3. Aftercare Program
Even after leaving, moms can still come back for help. They can get diapers, therapy, and other support when they need it.
“Once you’re family, you’re always family here at Mother’s Refuge.”
Empowering Moms and Protecting Children
Mother’s Refuge cares about both moms and their babies. They know the first five years of a child’s life are very important. Babies need a safe, loving home to grow and learn.
“If we can wrap around these little babies… the first five years of their life as their little brains develop and grow, it gives the mom such empowerment.”
Many of these moms didn’t have that kind of start themselves. Now they have the chance to give their children something different, a stable, caring home.
“Whatever we can do to help these girls… not just make it through, but to thrive.”
Individualized Education and Life Skills
Each mom gets a plan built just for her. Some are working on a GED. Others want to go to college or learn how to care for their babies.
“We have several therapists on staff. We have case workers for our girls. We have lots of different classes… parenting, safe relationships, healthy relationships.”
“Whatever our girls are going through… we just wrap around them with that holistic care.”
The team also helps with tutoring and job prep. If a mom is interested in a career, they’ll try to connect her with someone in that field.
“We might hook them up with a mentor that might be in that same career field.”
Ongoing Support Through Aftercare
The help doesn’t stop when a mom moves out. She can always come back.
“Girls and their families can always come back for resources. They can always come back for diapers, therapy, and support.”
By keeping those doors open, Mother’s Refuge helps these families feel supported for the long run.
